The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Alumni Relations Division hosted an inspiring Durban Alumni Association (DAA) presentation featuring UKZN alumnus and award-winning educator Mr Samkelo Mhlophe, popularly known as ‘iLembe Lothisha’.
The talk was part of a DAA series aimed at providing a platform for distinguished alumni to share details about their journeys, experiences and insights with colleagues, students and the broader University community.
Originally from Hammarsdale, near Durban, Mhlophe has become one of South Africa’s most recognised educators through his impactful teaching methods and educational content on the social media platform TikTok. He has attracted over 832 000 followers and more than 10 million likes, making his platform the largest teacher account in Africa.
During the talk, Mhlophe reflected on his academic and professional journey. He said after completing matric at Sikhethuxolo High School in Hammarsdale, he received a bursary to study Civil Engineering at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU – now Nelson Mandela University). However, after completing his studies, he realised that his true passion was teaching. He later enrolled at UKZN for a Bachelor of Education degree.
While studying at UKZN, Mhlophe was selected as one of eight students to represent the University in Germany and Switzerland for six months as part of a programme focused on community engagement in education. He described the opportunity as one that broadened his perspective on education and leadership.
Speaking passionately about teaching, Mhlophe emphasised the importance of building strong relationships with learners and creating an environment where they enjoy learning. “For learners to pass your subject, you first need to make them love your subject,” he said. “Once they enjoy and connect with what you teach, it becomes easier for them to learn from you.”
He also reflected on the support he received during his time at UKZN and thanked Professor Angela James, one of his lecturers who played a significant role in his life while he was a student.
Mhlophe shared how James supported him following the loss of his mother. “Prof James stepped up for me during a very difficult time in my life, and I will always be grateful for her support,” he said.
After graduating in 2019, Mhlophe began his teaching career as a Life Sciences educator and currently teaches at Makhumbuza High School in Umlazi. His innovative teaching style and dedication to learner success have earned him several accolades, including recognition at the National Teacher Awards in 2025, where he received the award for Best Life Sciences Teacher from Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube and President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Today, Mhlophe also owns several educational centres and an upgrading school in Durban called: Education Made Easy, where he continues to support learners from across South Africa and beyond.
His story serves as a reminder of the impact passionate educators can have in transforming lives and shaping the future of education.
