Funda nge-UKZN
Motivation:
Prevalence of student entrepreneurship in UKZN campuses and residences has led to the recent development of the student entrepreneurship policy. The policy among other things encourages students to open their own businesses on campus. However, most students do not have financial literacy and management some do not know about tax or even company registration, and this is a threat to these small businesses.
Secondly, given that a great number of students are beneficiaries of NSFAS, UKZN bursaries and other bursaries it is evident that most students do not have responsible spending and borrowing behaviour. This does not dispute that there are some students who have no source of funding and therefore are struggling to make ends meet within university residences. However, it seeks to draw focus to the evident patterns of alcohol and drug abuse, extreme partying behaviour, impulsive shopping beyond ones means which then leads to relative poverty within residences or even Blessor Syndrome.
Broader Objectives:
- To teach students on financial literacy, cost and revenue management; responsible spending and borrowing.
- To equip students on practical money management skills.
