UKZN Matric Helpline Delivers STEM Exam Prep to Hundreds of Grade 12s

The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) Matric Helpline Programme recently hosted mathematics and physical sciences examination preparation workshops for Grade 12 learners from schools across the uMshwathi Municipality, providing targeted academic support ahead of mid-year examinations.

Hosted at Cool Air Secondary School in Durban, the workshops brought together learners from multiple circuits within the municipality, creating an opportunity for participants to strengthen their understanding of key science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) concepts while preparing for the demands of the National Senior Certificate examinations. Simultaneously, the Matric Helpline team hosted additional examination preparation workshops on UKZN’s Pietermaritzburg campus, where learners from neighbouring schools received the same high-quality academic support. Together, these parallel interventions enabled the programme to reach hundreds of learners in a single day.

The workshops focused on content revision, problem-solving strategies, examination techniques and addressing common misconceptions in mathematics and physical sciences. Facilitated by experienced UKZN tutors, the sessions encouraged active engagement with challenging curriculum content and provided learners with practical approaches to tackling examination questions.

The workshops form part of the UKZN Matric Helpline Programme’s ongoing commitment to supporting learner achievement, particularly in gateway STEM subjects that play a critical role in accessing Higher Education and future career opportunities.

Science and Technology Education Centre (STEC) officer, Ms Lexia Naidoo, said the simultaneous delivery of workshops demonstrates the University’s commitment to extending quality academic support to learners across KwaZulu-Natal.

“Our goal is to ensure that learners have access to quality academic support regardless of where they attend school,” said Naidoo. “By delivering workshops simultaneously in different locations, we are able to support more learners while strengthening partnerships with schools and the Department of Education. Beyond examination preparation, we hope to inspire learners to pursue STEM qualifications and to see UKZN as a destination for their future studies,” said Naidoo.

In addition to subject support, learners heard about Higher Education opportunities and STEM-related career pathways, reinforcing the connection between academic achievement and future success.

The workshops reflect UKZN’s broader commitment to educational development and community engagement across KwaZulu-Natal. Through partnerships with schools, educators and education stakeholders, the University continues to create opportunities that support learner success while contributing to the development of KwaZulu-Natal’s future STEM workforce.
