The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Impi Blind Cricket team made a landmark debut at the 2026 Bureau Veritas T20 Blind Cricket Cup, marking a significant milestone for inclusive sport development in the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
Held in Durban, the third edition of the tournament brought together five teams for the first time, reflecting the rapid growth of blind cricket in the province. Matches were played in a round-robin T20 format across Dokkies 1 and Dokkies 2 fields under World Blind Cricket Ltd rules, with support from the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union (KZNCU) and officials co-ordinated by the KwaZulu-Natal Association for Blind Cricket (KZNABC).
The tournament’s expansion builds on a growing partnership between Bureau Veritas, the KwaZulu-Natal Society for the Blind (KZNSB), and KZNABC, which began in 2024. What started as sponsorship of the Heritage T20 Cup has since evolved into a sustained commitment to developing blind cricket across the province.
Originally featuring three teams – AmaQhawe, Umbilo Giant Killers, and Scorpions – the competition expanded in 2025 with the addition of the Pioneers from Pietermaritzburg. In 2026, it reached another milestone with the inclusion of the UKZN Impi team and the United States of KZN.
The inclusion of the UKZN Impi team marks the revival of inclusive sport at the Institution. UKZN’s Sport Day for Students with Disabilities (SWDs), first introduced in 2016, was discontinued during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2026, the University reintroduced two disability sport codes – blind cricket and goalball – signalling a renewed commitment to inclusion, participation, and student wellbeing.
The reintroduction of blind cricket and goalball directly supports one of the five pillars of UKZN’s Strategic Plan: creating meaningful student experiences. Through inclusive sporting opportunities, the University is ensuring that students with disabilities can participate fully in campus life, while promoting wellbeing, belonging and student success.
Despite limited equipment and logistical challenges, the UKZN Impi team made a spirited debut, supported by the dedication of team management and the UKZN Sport Office.
The team played four matches in total. They opened their campaign against the Scorpions, going down by 8 wickets despite a determined effort. Their second outing against AmaQhawe proved challenging, with the experienced side securing an 8-wicket win.
However, UKZN Impi wrote a memorable chapter later that day when they secured their first-ever victory against the United States of KZN, winning by 6 wickets after successfully chasing 79 runs. The win was celebrated as a defining moment in the team’s debut tournament.
Their final match against Umbilo Giant Killers ended in defeat, as Umbilo Giant Killers claimed a five-wicket win in a tightly contested encounter.
The 2026 edition showcased the increasing strength of blind cricket in KwaZulu-Natal. AmaQhawe emerged as the overall champions after winning four matches, followed by Umbilo Giant Killers with three victories, Scorpions with two and UKZN Impi securing one win in their debut appearance.
Several matches were broadcast live via PitchVision technology and YouTube, significantly increasing visibility for blind cricket and its athletes. Featured matches included UKZN Impi’s encounters against AmaQhawe and the United States of KZN.
Reflecting on the journey, UKZN Sport Coordinator Dr Khumbuzile Khumalo described the establishment of the team as a demanding but deeply rewarding process.
She said the team’s formation required patience, commitment and sustained support, especially as many students were new to blind cricket. However, she expressed pride that the vision had been realised with the team’s successful participation in the 2026 tournament.
“The performance of the players was extremely good, and in the coming event scheduled for September 2026, we will see wonders as they continue to master the skills they have acquired,” she said, adding that several players may be considered for provincial selection, including the Hollywoodbets Dolphins blind cricket structures.
Khumalo also acknowledged the collective effort of staff, including Mr Phiwayinkosi Mungwe and Mr Derrick Munyai, as well as the UKZN Sports Interim Committee: Ms Nosipho Tenza and Head of Department for Sport, Mr Zwelithethindaba Sapula, for their logistical and institutional support.
The Bureau Veritas T20 Blind Cricket Cup 2026 not only celebrated competitive cricket but also reinforced the commitment of Bureau Veritas, KZNSB, KZNABC and UKZN to inclusion, empowerment, and equal sporting opportunities for visually impaired athletes.
As UKZN Impi looks ahead to future tournaments, the team’s debut stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, growth, and the expanding landscape of inclusive sport in KwaZulu-Natal.
