UKZN Ranked Among Top 2.5% of Universities Worldwide in Latest Global Rankings

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has once again cemented its standing among the world’s leading Higher Education Institutions, earning a place in the top 2.5% of universities globally in the latest Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) Global 2000 list.

In a ranking that assessed 21 291 universities worldwide, UKZN secured an impressive 532nd position overall, highlighting its growing international reputation for academic excellence and research impact. The University’s standout achievement was in graduate employability, where it ranked 362nd globally, a powerful endorsement of its ability to produce graduates equipped to thrive and lead in an increasingly competitive global economy.

Widely regarded as one of the most rigorous and comprehensive university rankings, CWUR draws on 81 million outcome-based data points and relies exclusively on objective performance indicators. Universities are assessed across four key areas: education, employability, faculty quality, and research, without the use of surveys or institutional submissions. This data-driven approach provides an independent measure of institutional performance and global influence.

Beyond its overall ranking, UKZN continues to strengthen its reputation as a research-intensive university, placing 523rd in the world for research performance. The Institution also remains firmly positioned among the top five universities in both South Africa and Africa, reinforcing its role as a leading centre of scholarship, innovation and societal impact on the continent.

Executive Director of Corporate Relations, Dr Normah Zondo, congratulated the University community on the achievement, describing it as a testament to UKZN’s resilience, academic excellence and unwavering commitment to innovation.

“Breaking into the top 2.5% of more than 21 000 universities globally affirms UKZN’s standing as a world-class institution,” said Zondo. “What makes this recognition particularly meaningful is that the CWUR rankings are based purely on objective, outcome-based data rather than self-reported surveys.”

She added that UKZN’s strong employability ranking sends a clear message about the value of its qualifications. “Our position at 362 globally for employability demonstrates that our graduates are equipped not only with theoretical knowledge but with the skills required to excel in the global workforce. We are proud to be developing future leaders, researchers, and innovators who will shape society both locally and internationally.”

The CWUR is an internationally recognised consulting organisation that provides policy advice and strategic insights to governments and Higher Education Institutions. Since its establishment in 2012, CWUR has published global university rankings that assess quality across education, employability, faculty excellence, and research output, without relying on surveys or institutional data submissions.

Originally launched as a project in Saudi Arabia’s Makkah Province to rank the world’s top 100 universities, CWUR quickly gained global recognition. The ranking expanded to include the top 1 000 institutions in 2014 and later grew to the current top 2 000 universities in 2019, making it the largest academic ranking of its kind.
