UKZN Medical Alumni Are Leading the Way in Giving Back

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) – Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine is proving to be a School that not only produces great doctors but people who are determined to make a positive impact in the lives of UKZN students.

They have emerged as trailblazers in alumni fundraising, inspiring other classes to reunite and create a lasting impact for future generations of doctors.

The MBChB Class of 2002 marked their 20-year reunion by establishing a Food Fund to support Medical students facing food insecurity and financial hardship.

Understanding that UKZN has a large number of unfunded students who struggle to meet their basic needs, the group decided to pool their resources together to make a greater impact – and they certainly did. They raised R100 000, which went directly towards feeding hundreds of Medical students, easing financial pressures that students should not have to face.

The MBChB Class of 2005 took the baton and did not disappoint. The group hosted a fundraising gala dinner at Zimbali and raised an impressive R115 000, which enabled five Medical students with outstanding fees to continue their studies.

The beneficiaries were identified by Student Funding as high-performing students at risk of exclusion due to financial constraints, with the final selection made by the Board of the newly established fund.

The class took it a step further and offered to mentor the students, which demonstrates their commitment to supporting and guiding the students to reach their career goals. The Class of 2005 has established a Medics Legacy Fund, which is open to all Medical alumni who wish to pledge their support and contribute towards the success of future doctors.

Their commitment reflects the power of alumni coming together to create a lasting impact and ensure that deserving students have the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
