UKZN Dentistry Champions Oral Health Awareness

World Oral Health Day at UKZN.

World Oral Health Day was celebrated by the Discipline of Dentistry at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) with an engaging and impactful awareness drive at the Westville campus quad, joining the global community in promoting better oral health practices under the theme: ‘A Healthy Mouth is a Happy Life’.

Celebrated annually on 20 March, World Oral Health Day highlights the critical role oral health plays in overall well-being. From preventing tooth decay and gum disease to supporting confidence, nutrition, and quality of life, the day serves as a powerful reminder that good oral health is essential at every stage of life.

This year’s activation at UKZN created a lively, interactive space where students and staff could access free oral health screenings, receive expert advice, and engage directly with final-year Dental Therapy and Oral Hygiene students. The initiative not only encouraged preventative care but also reinforced the importance of early detection and healthy daily habits.

Head of the Discipline of Dentistry, Dr Ilana Moodley, emphasised the profound impact oral health has on individuals’ daily lives. “When someone has a toothache, they are in a lot of pain and often lose valuable time at school or work. If the front teeth are decayed, people may feel embarrassed to smile, which can affect their confidence,” she said. Moodley added that the event goes beyond awareness, reinforcing the connection between oral health and overall well-being.

“If you have a healthy mouth, supported by good oral hygiene and proper nutrition, you have a happy mouth. And a happy mouth contributes to overall health and well-being – ultimately leading to a happier life,” she explained.

Lecturer in Dentistry Dr Ashveer Gopie highlighted the broader significance of the day and the role of students in advancing oral health awareness. “This marks an important day where we join our global family in advancing oral healthcare and strengthening community engagement at UKZN. Our final-year Dental Therapy and Oral Hygiene students play a critical role in educating stakeholders about the importance of caring for the oral cavity and maintaining a healthy mouth and a confident smile,” said Gopie.

For students, the day also serves as a valuable experiential learning platform. By engaging directly with the public through screenings and educational activities, they were able to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings, strengthen communication skills, and better understand the oral health challenges faced by communities. Importantly, it reinforces their role as future oral health advocates committed to prevention and improved community health outcomes.
