Professor Temesgen Zewotir from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has received prestigious international recognition from Bahir Dar University in Ethiopia for his outstanding contributions to the development of Statistics and Data Science and his transformative impact on Higher Education and research across the African continent.
A recognition ceremony was held on 8 May 2026 at the Science College Hall of Bahir Dar University, where senior university leaders, international delegates, academics and students gathered to celebrate Zewotir’s remarkable academic career and enduring legacy of scholarship, mentorship and institutional collaboration.
The recognition honoured Zewotir’s foundational role in establishing the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Bahir Dar University. His contribution extended beyond curriculum development to the creation and strengthening of a long-standing strategic partnership between Bahir Dar University and UKZN. Through this collaboration, numerous opportunities have been created for doctoral training, joint supervision, staff development and collaborative research, significantly enhancing research capacity and elevating the institution’s regional and international profile.
Zewotir’s influence reaches far beyond Ethiopia. Throughout his career, he has played a leading role in collaborative initiatives involving the University of Rwanda, the Institute of Data Science in East Africa, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and several public health and research institutions across southern and East Africa. These partnerships have advanced interdisciplinary research, postgraduate training and data-driven approaches to addressing some of the continent’s most pressing societal challenges.
Speaking during the ceremony, Dean of the College of Science Professor Berhanu Assaye described Zewotir as a scholar whose impact resonated throughout Africa because of his unwavering commitment to academic development and research excellence.
Vice President for Academic Affairs Professor Essey Kebede highlighted Zewotir’s unique ability to bridge advanced theoretical scholarship with practical institutional transformation. Kebede also acknowledged the important role played by UKZN in supporting the growth and advancement of Statistics and Data Science at Bahir Dar University through collaborative academic partnerships developed over many years.
Representing UKZN at the event, Professor Retius Chifurira reflected on Zewotir’s dedication to scholarship, mentorship and collaborative research.
“Professor Zewotir’s work continues to inspire and shape a new generation of researchers and academics across the continent,” said Chifurira.
In his acceptance remarks, Zewotir underscored the importance of collaborative scholarship and academic solidarity in strengthening African research and Higher Education.
“This recognition reflects the power of partnership, mentorship and collective effort in advancing knowledge. Our responsibility as scholars is to build strong research networks, support emerging academics and pursue research that contributes meaningful solutions to the challenges facing our societies,” he said.
The ceremony also marked an important milestone in the evolving relationship between the two institutions. Discussions held during the visit culminated in a shared commitment to explore the development of a joint doctoral degree programme between UKZN and Bahir Dar University. The proposed initiative aims to strengthen postgraduate training, deepen research collaboration and enhance the global visibility of African scholarship.
While the recognition celebrates Zewotir’s continental and international achievements, it also highlights his significant contributions at UKZN. He has played an instrumental role in establishing the University’s Data Science Unit and Data Science academic programmes, helping position UKZN at the forefront of one of the fastest-growing disciplines globally.
Through Zewotir’s leadership and contribution, data science has developed into one of UKZN’s most sought-after academic offerings, consistently attracting applications far exceeding available places. His efforts have contributed significantly to building data science capacity in South Africa while creating opportunities for future generations of researchers and professionals.
“The recognition from Bahir Dar University serves as a testament not only to Zewotir’s distinguished career, but also to UKZN’s growing influence in advancing research excellence, postgraduate education and institutional partnerships across Africa,” said Chifurira.
