UKZN Graduates Discover the Natural Treasures of Pigeon Valley Nature Reserve

The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) Durban Alumni Association (DAA) recently brought together UKZN Durban-based alumni and friends for an educational guided tour of the Pigeon Valley Nature Reserve. The tour was led by Dr Crispin Hemson (UKZN alumnus and staff member), who has been involved with the reserve for more than 35 years.

Located in Glenwood, Pigeon Valley Nature Reserve is one of Durban’s lesser-known natural treasures. The 10-hectare reserve is home to about 110 indigenous tree species and a wide variety of wildlife, including birds, butterflies, rare plants and red duikers.

During the tour, Hemson shared his knowledge of the reserve and explained why protecting and preserving natural spaces is important. He also helped the 88 participants identify different bird calls and introduced them to the many plants and animals that live in the reserve.

Hemson explained that “the reserve has different habitats, including thick bush and tall trees, which support a rich diversity of life. Its importance was first recognised by Mr John Medley Wood, the founder of the Durban Botanic Gardens, and it was officially declared a nature reserve about 10 years ago.”

The outing gave alumni and friends an opportunity to enjoy nature, learn more about the environment and spend time together. It also highlighted the important work done by the Friends of Pigeon Valley, a group that helps to protect the reserve by clearing invasive plants and supporting conservation efforts.

During his vote of thanks, Mr Robin Ralfe (Chairperson of DAA) remarked, “I must thank you (Dr Hemson) very sincerely as a Durban resident for everything you are doing to preserve our heritage. These things can easily disappear and be lost forever. Please keep up the good work because we really appreciate what you are doing.”

The UKZN DAA continues to organise activities that bring alumni together while promoting lifelong learning, friendship and environmental awareness.
