Top Matriculants Flock to UKZN, Igniting a Future of Excellence

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is thrilled to welcome an exceptional cohort of matriculants from the Class of 2025, who achieved stellar results and notably chose UKZN.

Their decision highlights the University’s standing as a hub of academic and research excellence, ideal for these bright young minds destined to be future leaders and innovators. Each student brings unique dedication and a clear vision.

Mr Siyabulela Siyanda Cele (Phayiphini High School, Pietermaritzburg) achieved an 88% pass.

Crediting consistent hard work, he is pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) in Accounting and aspires to be a Chartered Accountant

“Consistent hard work is the key. I chose UKZN because it is one of the best universities in South Africa, and it is close to my home, so I feel at home.”

Mr Ayabonga Khanyile (Emkhayideni Technical High School, Richards Bay) obtained an outstanding 92.1% pass, with seven distinctions (five A+). He has registered for a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), driven by a passion for a more sophisticated future.

He highlighted UKZN’s prestige, internationally recognised qualifications, and competent graduates. He aims for a Master’s in Law at Harvard University, specialising in Corporate Law, following his studies in order to become a corporate attorney.

Ms Philile Nzimande (Lamontville High School) achieved an 85% pass with seven distinctions through hard work, dedication and consistency.

Motivated to alleviate human suffering and aspiring to specialise in neurosurgery, Nzimande will pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) due to its “renowned academic excellence and clinical opportunities”.

Mr Jordan Walker (Westville Boys High School) achieved seven distinctions with an 89% average, placing fourth academically. He will study Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) at UKZN’s Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine. Walker chose UKZN for its strong research focus and medical facilities, especially given its role in the COVID-19 pandemic. Staying in Durban provides crucial support.

At just 17, Ms Keren Curtis (Durban Girls’ College) joins UKZN for her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree, having achieved eight distinctions and top 1% in Life Sciences IEB. She chose UKZN for its research leadership and training of impactful healthcare professionals. She aspires to contribute meaningfully to research, motivated by becoming her best self and seeing obstacles as growth opportunities.

The University also proudly welcomes top achievers from St Henry’s Marist College, Durban: Mr James Koorbanally, Ms Emma Scott, and Ms Andrea James Naidoo.

Koorbanally, who “enjoys serving communities”, is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electronic) after achieving exceptional results (e.g., 100% Engineering Graphics Design [EGD], 97% Maths). He credits consistent studying, time management, and self-discipline, motivated by growth and making a positive impact.

He plans a career in robotics, applying his knowledge and contributing to society while continuing community service.

Scott, studying a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, was drawn to UKZN’s strong engineering, particularly its extensive aerospace program, aligning with her postgraduate aerospace goals. She completed matric with seven distinctions and a 91% aggregate, placing top 1% nationally for EGD, Afrikaans First Additional Language, and Life Orientation (Independent Exam Board (IEB) and National Senior Certificate (NSC).

Bilingualism motivated her academic excellence in a second language. After her degree, she plans a career in the aerospace industry.

Naidoo, “disciplined and goal-driven”, values growth and consistency. She achieved a 84.43% average in the IEB exams and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.

Motivated to create a positive impact, she approaches opportunities with purpose and resilience. She chose UKZN for its highly skilled engineers, leadership in innovation, and superb reputation, also appreciating family support nearby for a demanding engineering degree.

Welcoming the University’s new students, Ms Normah Zondo, Executive Director of Corporate Relations, said UKZN was privileged to receive the nation’s most recent matric achievers, describing them as a generation that embodies academic excellence and promise.

“We are delighted to welcome this outstanding cohort of matriculants to UKZN. Your decision to join our University reflects both your remarkable achievements and our enduring commitment to cultivating future leaders, innovators, and change-makers. We look forward to walking alongside you as you begin this transformative chapter of your lives,” she said, encouraging first-year students to make full use of the University’s comprehensive support services. Zondo noted that the transition from school to university life often requires thoughtful adjustment and resilience, and assured students that UKZN’s academic and wellness structures were in place to guide and empower them every step of the way,” said Zondo.
