KZN Dolphins Triumph at Blind Cricket SA Tournament

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Hollywoodbets Dolphins Blind Cricket team emerged victorious at the 2024 Blind Cricket South Africa (BCSA) T20 National Tournament held in Potchefstroom from 27- 30 April. Competing against seven other provincial teams, the Dolphins finished undefeated, winning all seven matches and bringing the T20 trophy back to KZN for the first time in their history. This is KZN’s first blind cricket national title since they won the 40-Over-format BCSA One Day Cup in 2004.

The tournament featured teams from Limpopo, Northerns (Northern Gauteng), Free State, Boland, North West Dragons, DP World Lions (Central Gauteng), and Border Lions (Eastern Cape). The Dolphins’ impressive performance is a testament to their dedication and skill.

KZN Hollywoodbets Dolphins’ Vice-Captain, Mr Tebogo Moloisane, expressed his pride in the team’s unity and commitment, which were crucial to their success. ‘We created unity, commitment and dedication among our team players to accomplish our goal, which was to bring the Cup home,’ he said.

The journey to this victory was challenging, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw the loss of many star players. Head Coach Mr Ndumiso Nyawose, along with Assistant Coaches Mr Sthabiso Ngatana and Mr Bruce Mvundla, worked tirelessly to rebuild the team. ‘We are very proud of how our players have grown and continue to improve,’ said Nyawose.

Biokinetics, Exercise and Leisure Sciences (BELS) lecturer at UKZN and assistant manager of the Dolphins, Dr Khumbuzile Khumalo highlighted the importance of expanding blind cricket to disadvantaged communities and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to support the team.

The KZN Blind Cricket executive committee extended its heartfelt thanks to their supporters and sponsors for their unwavering support, which has been instrumental in raising the level of cricket in the province. Special recognition was given to the founders of KZN Blind Cricket, Mr Shane Mahabeer and Mr Manny Mothilal, for providing a platform that enhances the lives of blind individuals through sport.

This victory not only marks a significant achievement for the KZN Hollywoodbets Dolphins but also underscores the importance of support and development in blind cricket, promising a bright future for the sport in the province.
