Family Legacy Lives on Through Cum Laude Graduate

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) community joined in celebrating with Dr Owami Mhlongo, who graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the College of Health Sciences (CHS), marking a milestone shaped by resilience, compassion, and a commitment to service.

Describing the achievement as “incredibly blessed,” Owami reflected on the significance of sharing the Medical journey with her aunt, Dr Luh Mhlongo, whose guidance and example inspired her throughout her studies. “She has been a constant source of encouragement and inspired me to pursue excellence with humility and purpose,” she said.

Originally from Chatsworth in Durban, Owami matriculated from Southlands Secondary School in 2019 with seven distinctions. Her passion for Medicine was fuelled by a desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives and honour the sacrifices of those who supported her journey.

Now serving as a Medical intern at the Pietermaritzburg Metropolitan Hospital Complex, Owami describes Medicine as both challenging and deeply rewarding. “There is something fulfilling about waking up each day knowing that you have the opportunity to impact someone’s life, whether through a comforting conversation or simply being present during difficult moments,” she shared.

Among her highlights at UKZN was serving as an academic mentor, where she supported and guided younger students. “It reminded me of the importance of uplifting others as we grow,” she noted.

Her favourite clinical rotation was rural medicine, which exposed her to the realities of healthcare delivery in under-resourced communities and reinforced the importance of adaptability, empathy, and patient-centred care.

Owami credits her faith and her mother’s unwavering support as central pillars throughout her academic journey. “My mother has been my guiding light through every challenge,” she said.

Looking ahead, she hopes to specialise as a rheumatologist while continuing to empower young women beyond the field of Medicine. Guided by her personal motto centred on courage and perseverance, Owami’s journey reflects purpose-driven leadership, academic excellence, and a passion for serving others.
