Exam Preparation Marathon Empowers Accounting Students

The team behind the Accounting Exam Preparation Marathon.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) College of Law and Management Studies (CLMS), in partnership with the African Women Chartered Accountants (AWCA) and the Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants of Southern Africa (ABASA), recently hosted a three-day Exam Preparation Marathon aimed at equipping Accounting students with the tools and support needed to excel in their upcoming examinations.

The initiative provided students with an opportunity to strengthen their academic preparation through focused revision sessions, peer learning and practical guidance on examination techniques and time management. The marathon formed part of ongoing efforts to create a supportive learning environment and promote student success during a critical period of the academic year.

Over three days, students engaged with Supplemental Instruction (SI) leaders, tutors, academic staff, and fellow students in intensive revision activities designed to reinforce key concepts and enhance examination readiness.

AWCA, a professional organisation committed to advancing and empowering African women in the chartered accountancy profession through mentorship, leadership development and educational support, played a key role in the initiative. While the organisation remains focused on supporting women in the profession, it is also expanding its impact through collaborative programmes that benefit a broader student community.

Programmes such as the Exam Preparation Marathon demonstrate AWCA’s commitment to supporting all students, including the Black boy child, as they pursue academic excellence and prepare for future professional success.

The marathon attracted students, academic staff, tutors and representatives from AWCA and ABASA, all united by a shared commitment to student achievement. Although attendance declined over the course of the programme, those who remained demonstrated remarkable dedication and a willingness to invest the time and effort required to achieve their academic goals.

A highlight of the event was the distribution of stationery packs to participating students. The packs were sponsored by CLMS and the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), providing practical support to students as they prepared for their examinations.

Chairperson of AWCA, Ms Fundiswa Nkuna expressed appreciation for the collaborative effort that made the initiative possible and highlighted the importance of partnerships in creating meaningful opportunities for student development and success.

The success of the Exam Preparation Marathon underscores the value of collaboration between academic institutions and professional organisations in fostering student achievement. The organisers extended their gratitude to all partners, facilitators, tutors, and students who contributed to the programme and wished students every success in their examinations.

As students embark on their examination period, the message from organisers was clear: success is earned through preparation, commitment, and hard work – because, as the saying goes, ‘Success comes before work only in the dictionary’.
