CCA Presents 27th Time of the Writer Festival

The Centre for Creative Arts (CCA) in the College of Humanities is hosting the 27^th Time of the Writer Festival which got underway with an intriguing line up at Alliance Française in Morningside, Durban.

This year’s edition includes book launches, panel discussions, workshops, and readings, combining online and offline platforms to reach a national and global audience.

The theme, Reflections, Resonance and Revival, honours South Africa’s 30 years of constitutional democracy and highlights the vital role that authors and literature play in preserving democratic principles and the country’s global standing.

More than half the participants – 64 out of 105 – writers, are women, marking a celebration of female literary brilliance. This highlights the festival’s ongoing commitment to advancing diversity, inclusion, and gender parity in the literary sphere.

‘Featuring more than 50% female authors in this year’s festival is not just a statistic; it’s a testament to our commitment to amplifying the diverse voices of women who are shaping the landscape of contemporary literature. Their stories, insights, and perspectives are pivotal in reflecting, resonating, and reviving the rich tapestry of tales that underpin the values of South Africa as a constitutional democracy,’ said CCA Director, Dr Ismail Mahomed.

The 27^th Time of the Writer festival features Zakes Mda, a monumental figure in the literary world, as a keynote speaker, as well as an impressive line-up of talented authors eager to share their recent work and engage in thought-provoking discussions. They include Justice Malala, known for his acute political analyses; Siphiwo Mahala, renowned for his evocative storytelling; and Angela Makholwa, celebrated for her captivating thrillers. The festival also welcomes writers from other African countries, including Margaret Busbyfrom Ghana, Kenya’s Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor and Israel Campos from Angola.
