Book on Sex and Sexuality Co-Compiled by UKZN Academic

Book cover - Sex and Sexuality Within the Family Context.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) Professor Radhamany Sooryamoorthy, in partnership with Professor Sampson Lee Blair of the State University of New York (Buffalo), has compiled a book on sex and sexuality in the family context.

The volume, published by Emerald Publishing, brings together contributions from scholars worldwide.

The collection, part of a series on contemporary perspectives in family research, offers insights into the diverse and complex issues surrounding sex, sexuality and family dynamics across different cultures and societies. From the marital aspirations of sexual minority transgender young adults to the evolving intimacies of Indian women, each chapter provides a unique perspective on how personal and societal factors shape sexual identities and relationships.

The chapters in the volume examine the intersection of religion, politics and sexuality, exploring topics such as adolescent sex, toxic masculinity, and the impact of dominant conservative socialising agents on attitudes toward same-sex adoption. The long-term effects of adverse childhood experiences on sexual health, survival mechanisms for identity management and the challenges faced by gay and lesbian parents are explored. By breaking the silence on these critical issues, Sex and Sexuality Within the Family Context provides valuable resources for scholars interested in understanding the intricate connections between sex, sexuality, and family life.

Said Sooryamoorthy: “It has been an enriching experience to work with Professor Blair on this book and bring some of my UKZN colleagues’ contributions into the spotlight.”
