The UKZN Chapter of the Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants of Southern Africa (ABASA) conducted a transformative educational outreach initiative at the Imbeleko Foundation in KwaNyuswa, KwaZulu-Natal.

The event targeted Grade 9 to Grade 11 students, equipping them with the tools and knowledge to make informed academic decisions, particularly in commerce-related fields. The initiative aimed to inspire students by showcasing the resources and opportunities available through UKZN and its collaborators and also to bridge the gap between high school and higher education through impactful sessions.

Ms Nontobeko Manqele, Chairperson of the ABASA UKZN Westville Student Chapter was among members who took lead in the initiative ‘The event included interactive presentations highlighting the importance of choosing commerce- related subjects and their potential to unlock diverse professional pathways. ABASA UKZN members shared real-life success stories to illustrate how fields like finance, business, and entrepreneurship could pave the way for success,’ said Manqele

‘Students participated in scenario-based exercises to better understand real-world business concepts and decision-making, showing remarkable enthusiasm and curiosity. Thought-provoking questions from the students further underscored their growing interest in the commerce stream,’ she said.

A comprehensive presentation introduced students to various career opportunities within the commerce field, supported by an overview of UKZN’s College of Law and Management Studies. Special emphasis was placed on the First-Year Experience programme, a support mechanism designed to ease the transition from high school to university life.

The success of this initiative was the result of a collaborative effort by key stakeholders: ABASA UKZN, UKZN Corporate Relations Division, Thuthuka Bursary Beneficiaries and the College of Law and Management Studies First-Year Experience Coordinators.

This educational outreach initiative successfully encouraged students to consider commerce-related opportunities while providing them with practical tools to navigate their academic and professional futures.
