The University of KwaZulu-Natal Medical Scheme (referred to as ‘the Scheme’), registration number 1520, is a non-profit organisation, registered with the Council for Medical Schemes and operates according to the Medical Schemes Act No 131 of 1998 and its regulations as amended from time to time.
Discovery Health (Pty) Ltd is a separate company referred to as ‘the administrator’, they are an authorized financial servicesprovider (registration number 1997/013480/07) who take care of the administration of the University of KwaZulu-Natal Medical Scheme.
The University of KwaZulu-Natal Medical Scheme was established in 1983 to ensure the best possible healthcare benefits for the employees of the University of KwaZulu-Natal and their immediate family members registered on the Scheme. The Scheme is managed by a Board of Trustees consisting of 10 members. Members elect five of these
Trustees and the Council of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the participating employer, appoints the remaining five. The Board of Trustees ensure the financial soundness of the Scheme and sets the rules that govern the Scheme to protect the members’ interest.
A Principal Officer is appointed by the Board of Trustees. The Principal Officer acts on an executive level, almost like a CEO of a company, and is responsible for the smooth running of the Scheme in support of the Board of Trustees.
The Scheme is also referred to the UKZN Medical Scheme. A summary of the Scheme benefits is annually distributed to its members in the Benefit Brochure and can also be found on the Scheme website. For more information, please register

To register for the University of KwaZulu-Natal Medical Scheme (‘UKZN Medical Scheme’) online services, please follow the instructions below.
- Go to www.discovery.co.za (you will access UKZN Medical Scheme via the Discovery website. Discovery Health is the administrator of the UKZN Medical Scheme)
- Click on ‘Register’
- Complete the registration process.
- Once you are registered, you will have electronic access to your benefit information for example, the claim tracker tool.
