Motivation:
The DSRA through the Office of Residence Life has with it they another programme under its wing. This programme speaks to safety and security in residences. The importance of this programme cannot be overstated. When students move in or sign-in for their rooms, they bring their valuables with them. These include, cell phones, laptops, clothes etc. To ensure safety and security not only of the valuable items, but of students too, the office of the RLC provides training for Residence Assistants. RAs will thereafter, conduct workshops/programmes by inviting Safety Health and Environment Department (S.H.E.), Risk Management Services (RMS), South African Police Services (SAPS), Fire Departments etc.
Broader Objectives:
- To teach students about the importance of complying with safety and security rules.
- To make them aware who the different stakeholders responsible for safety and security campus wide.
- To teach them about the procedure to follow in filing a complaint or case should they be harassed, assaulted or have any of the items stolen.
- To teach them to be aware of access points and rules regulating access into the residences.
- To familiarize them with the consequences of violating the rules or misconduct
- To allow them to raise issues that might be or affect their safety and security in their residences
