UKZN Ranks Among the Very Best in Sub-Saharan Africa

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has been placed among the top 10 universities in sub-Saharan Africa and in the Top 4 institutions in South Africa, once again affirming its position as a leader in Higher Education.

The positions were announced by the Times Higher Education (THE) Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings 2024. The prestigious rankings have refined their methodology to provide an in-depth evaluation of academic institutions in the region. The comprehensive assessment examined 129 universities across 22 countries, emphasising UKZN’s academic prestige and its significant contribution to the advancement of Higher Education on the continent

UKZN’s exceptional regional performance is complemented by its standing on the global stage. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 places the University among the top 501–600 worldwide, further highlighting its excellence in teaching, research and societal contributions.

The Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings, developed to address the region’s unique challenges and opportunities, evaluates institutions across five key pillars: resources and finance, access and fairness, student engagement, ethical leadership, and Africa impact. UKZN’s performance across these metrics reflects its unwavering commitment to academic excellence, social responsiveness and transformative leadership in the region.
