The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), a proud partner of Durban City FC, brought Premier Soccer League (PSL) excitement on campus with another lively team activation at the Howard College campus main entrance gate on Friday, 28 November.
Staff and students gathered in high spirits, joining the Corporate Relations Division and the ever-energetic Ms Tholani Ngema to celebrate the Citizens team ahead of their much-anticipated clash with Orlando Pirates which took place on Saturday 29 November. The match took place at Moses Mabhida Stadium, in Durban.
Music, cheering and student engagement created a festive atmosphere that helped energise the team for match day. The support continued on match day with another spirited activation at stadium where UKZN once again demonstrated its commitment to uplifting local sport and strengthening community ties.
Although Orlando Pirates secured a 2-0 win and climbed to the top of the Betway Premiership log, Durban City FC showed promise and determination in what remains their debut top-flight campaign. City started brightly, unsettling the opposition with aggressive pressing and confident wing play, creating early opportunities that reflected the team’s growing cohesion and ambition.
Even as the match tilted in Pirates’ favour, City’s resilience and fighting spirit were evident throughout, reinforcing the potential that has made their rise to the PSL a source of pride for supporters across KwaZulu-Natal.
For UKZN and its vibrant student community, the weekend was less about the score line and more about unity, pride and a celebration of a partnership that continues to inspire campus engagement. The University remains committed to supporting Durban City FC as they build momentum and continue their journey in the top tier of South African football.
