UKZN Professor Receives Prestigious Geography Fellowship

UKZN’s Professor Onisimo Mutanga, an expert in Remote Sensing and the South African Research Chair (SARChI) in Land Use Planning and Management, has been awarded the prestigious Fellowship of the Society of SA Geographers (SSAG).

The accolade, which recognises outstanding scholarship that contributes to the advancement of Geography, was presented to him during the SSAG Conference held at the North West University in Potchefstroom.

Mutanga’s body of work – comprising extensive research, teaching and supervision – exemplifies the values of innovation and dedication the Society seeks to promote. The recognition also confers honorary lifetime membership to the Society, further solidifying his influential role in the discipline.

‘Receiving this award is both a humbling and exhilarating experience,’ said Mutanga. ‘It reflects the collaborative efforts of my colleagues and students who continually inspire and challenge me in our shared pursuit of knowledge.’

The SSAG Council highlighted Mutanga’s remarkable contributions not only through research but also in teaching and administrative capacities. His commitment to the development of Geography in South Africa has significantly enriched the academic community and beyond.

The Society of South African Geographers aims to encourage excellence in various geographic fields, acknowledging achievements in research, writing, teaching and other professional areas. The Fellowship award is one of the highest honours conferred by the Society, emphasising the importance of scholarship and the advancement of geographic knowledge.

This year’s conference brought together geographers from across South Africa, providing a platform for sharing the latest research and fostering collaboration within the field. Mutanga delivered a keynote address at the conference, profiling trends in rangeland monitoring using Remote Sensing. The award ceremony took place during the conference’s Gala Dinner, a highlight of the event attended by prominent scholars, practitioners, and students.

‘Professor Mutanga’s recognition is a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence and his contributions to the discipline of Geography,’ said Professor Zarina Patel, President of the SSAG. ‘His work not only advances academic inquiry but also addresses pressing societal challenges through innovative geographical methods.’

As a professor of Remote Sensing, Mutanga has made significant strides in understanding land use dynamics, leveraging technology to inform sustainable practices in the environment. His research has implications for urban planning, agriculture and environmental management, positioning him as a vital resource in the ongoing discourse around land use and sustainability in South Africa.

His SSAG Fellowship adds to a growing list of accolades that celebrate his influential work and commitment to the advancement of Geography. He continues to inspire both students and colleagues alike with his passion for the field and his dedication to mentoring the next generation of geographers.

Said Acting Dean and Head of the School of Agricultural, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Professor Julia Sibiya: ‘Congratulations Oni! Keep flying the UKZN flag high. As a School, we are indeed proud of this achievement.’
