UKZN PhD Candidate Elected to Lead Role in PASA

PhD candidate in Population Studies within the School of Social Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Mr Siyamthanda Jordaan, has been elected as the Student Representative of the Population Association of Southern Africa (PASA) for a two-year term.

His election took place during the recently held PASA Conference in Pretoria.

PASA is a scientific regional body that brings together scholars and practitioners in the field of demography and population studies, alongside policymakers and development partners, to engage with critical population issues affecting the Southern African region. The association is non-profit, non-political, and secular, with both individual and institutional members.

Jordaan expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to represent students within the association.

“It is an honour to be elected as the Student Representative of PASA. I look forward to ensuring that students in the field of Demography and Population Studies are meaningfully included in academic and professional conversations,” he said.

In his new role, Jordaan, working alongside newly elected committee members, plans to advocate for increased student participation in PASA activities, including conferences, seminars, and mentorship opportunities.

“There is still limited awareness among young scholars about the scope and impact of Demography and Population Studies. I hope to create platforms that support academic growth, knowledge exchange, and greater visibility for the discipline,” he added.

This election not only marks a significant professional milestone for Jordaan but also reflects the calibre of scholarship emerging from UKZN’s School of Social Sciences. His appointment is expected to create further opportunities for student engagement and representation at national and regional levels.
