The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) Discipline of Pharmaceutical Sciences is committed to preparing students for successful and diverse careers within the Pharmacy profession.

The University’s Association of Pharmacy Students (UKNAPS), in collaboration with the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa Young Pharmacist Group (PSSA YPG), recently hosted the Connect and Elevate Pharmacy Career Expo at the Westville campus.

The event aimed to expose mainly third and fourth-year Pharmacy students to the diverse opportunities within the profession, including non-traditional career pathways and to explain pharmacy in a deeper context beyond the counter.

“This was intended to support informed decision-making for internship and post community service placements,” lecturer Dr Theodore Duxbury said.

Speakers represented a range of career pathways within pharmacy and included clinical pharmacists, researchers, academics, brand specialists, public health practitioners and clinical affairs specialists. Their presentations highlighted the breadth of opportunities available to graduates.

Students described the expo as informative, insightful and eye-opening, saying it broadened their understanding of the profession beyond traditional community pharmacy practice.

Duxbury and Reverend Dr Lehlohonolo Mathibe, Head of UKZN’s Discipline of Pharmaceutical Sciences, thanked UKNAPS, the YPG, the PSSA, the National Bioproducts Institute (NBI), the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) and Netcare for their support.
