UKZN Alumnus Elected 2025 President of Mine Medical Professionals Association

UKZN Medical School alumnus Dr Mzwandile Dlamini has been appointed the new President of the Mine Medical Professionals’ Association (MMPA).

Established in 1921, the MMPA’s mandate is to study, discuss and bring to the attention of its members, doctors and allied healthcare professionals working in or interested in the mining industry. They cover any matters of related interest, encouraging the continuation of medical education and fostering a friendly relationship of exchange of views among members and with other organisations connected with the mining industry.

Born and bred in KwaZulu-Natal, Dlamini is an Occupational Medical Practitioner with more than 14 years’ medical experience within South Africa’s public and private sectors. He thrives in emergency medicine, occupational health and safety as well as HIV/TB management. One of his major career highlights was spearheading the team that achieved 90-90-90 HIV targets in one of the platinum mines in 2020.

Dlamini obtained his MBChB at UKZN in 2009, after receiving several Dean’s Commendations. His Diploma in Occupational Health, also from UKZN, was followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management from Mancosa, Diplomas in HIV Management and Primary Emergency Care from the College of Medicine in 2019 and 2020 respectively, and being capped with his Master’s in Business Administration at Wits Business School.

Dlamini said he was passionate about people development and the use of technology to improve Healthcare.

His wide range of certificates from institutions across the country include: Competence in Travel Medicine Course; Dispensing, Advanced Cardiac Life Support; Advanced Paediatric Life Support; Advanced Clinical HIV Management; Basic Life Support; Advanced Trauma Life Support, and Emergency Ultrasound.

Dlamini is currently a Senior Occupational Medical Practitioner at Anglo American Platinum.

Outside work, Dlamini enjoys coaching and mentoring students as well as gardening.
