In November 2025, Dr Jenasha Tooray presented her research at the World Social Marketing Conference in Spain.
Representing the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Tooray engaged with behavioural scientists, researchers and industry experts from around the world.
“It was a pleasure to engage with the global social marketing community and draw inspiration from their passion for driving behaviour change for individual, social, and planetary good,” she said.
Tooray presented her research on plant-based product purchase intentions among young consumers in an emerging African economy that is highly vulnerable to climate change impacts.
She will present another paper at the International Conference on Green and Sustainable Development in Stellenbosch from 8-12 March 2026.
Her work examines the mediating role of attitudes in plant-based product purchase intentions as a strategy for climate change resilience.
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 3, 12 and 13) and Africa’s Agenda 2063, Tooray’s research informs policy and social marketing initiatives by identifying drivers of sustainable dietary shifts among young consumers.
These shifts aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, encourage positive behaviour change and strengthen resilience in climate-vulnerable regions.
“The global social marketing movement is gaining momentum, and I am proud to contribute as a catalyst for change, shaping a better future – one behaviour change at a time,” she said. “By raising awareness among young consumers about dietary strategies to lower their carbon footprint, we create wins for the environment and public health alike.”
Tooray credited her achievements to the support of her supervisor and mentor, Professor Debbie Ellis, expressing gratitude for her guidance throughout her research career. She also acknowledged the support of her husband, Yasheev, and her children, Aryana and Aryan.
“Their love, compassion and quiet strength have provided me with balance and inspiration, serving as a constant reminder of what truly matters in life,” declared Dr Tooray.
UKZN celebrates Tooray’s contributions to sustainable food practices and global behaviour change scholarship.
