Law graduates Ms Alex Louter and Ms Raaiqhah Akoo prove that hard work and dedication are the cornerstones of academic success, both graduating summa cum laude.
For Louter, graduating top of her class and receiving a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to pursue a Master of Laws (LLM) in the United States marks a defining moment in her academic journey – one which she gives all glory to Jesus Christ, her Lord and Saviour.
‘The experience of studying Law has been truly enriching,’ said Louter. ‘I thoroughly enjoyed studying my Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at UKZN, the academic and support staff were phenomenal – always open for consultations to assist me with coursework or to discuss future plans and scholarship opportunities. And because of that I now have the opportunity to make my dreams a reality.’
She is currently serving her articles at Norton Rose Fulbright and will soon travel to the United States to pursue an LLM in International Children’s Rights at the University of Michigan.
Louter’s passion for children’s rights advocacy was sparked during five months of volunteering at a home for survivors of sexual abuse and trafficking in Eswatini. She hopes to be admitted as an advocate and to dedicate her career to litigating for children’s rights.
Akoo received 12 Certificates of Merit, eight Dean’s Commendations, and the Anand Nepal Prize for Best Criminal Law Student. She was also awarded the UKZN Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship in 2022, 2023 and 2024. She is currently serving her articles at Norton Rose Fulbright and hopes to one day be an admitted attorney of the high court and pursue Law on an international scale.
‘From a young age, I was captivated by the persuasive power of language, logic, and reasoned argument – fundamental tools at the heart of the legal profession. Through spirited debates and a constant curiosity for “why?” this fascination grew into a deeper purpose. For me, Law is not just an academic field but a calling to challenge norms, question the present, and help shape a better future.
‘This qualification is a vital step in my journey to contribute meaningfully to justice and social transformation,’ added Akoo.
