The Black Lawyers Association Student Chapter (BLASC) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) Howard College campus, recently hosted a Speed Networking and Skills Development workshop.
The Executive of BLASC – Howard College campus invited guests and divided the programme into three parts – private law, which also included academia, advocacy and candidate attorneys. The event aimed to identify different careers Law students could venture into and assist students with tips on how to draft CVs and answer interview questions.
A large number of students attended with their notebooks in hand.
The event, the first of its kind, was described by BLASC Chairperson Ms Bukelwa Hlanganyana as one of the plans to bridge the unemployment gap among students. Hlanganyana mentioned that when she ran for leadership, she had a vision of building a relationship with the alumni of the Law School.
“The University of KwaZulu-Natal, specifically the School of Law, is rich with professionals who are trailblazers in work,” she said. “The aim is to bring them back and interact with them in an environment where students can ask questions and have them answered. Law is a competitive field; it requires one to always be a step ahead of others.”
Hlanganyana said students apply repeatedly for vacation work and articles but still get rejected, and the event hoped to help answer lingering questions about why this happens. “Though unemployment is a national crisis, we cannot negate the fact that candidate attorneys are still getting employed – this event aimed to discover that secret to employment,” she said.
