Six Bachelor of Optometry Students Graduate Cum Laude
Six students from UKZN have achieved academic excellence by graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Optometry.
The students: Ms Thembalethu Mchunu, Ms Mayuri Avesh Ramchurran, Ms Aparna Ramsookmohan, Ms Olwethu Terry Phiwayinkosi Shangase, Ms Simriti Singh, and Ms Nonduduzo Bonelile Zondo, were drawn to Optometry by their passion for vision care and a desire to make a difference in their communities.
Reflecting on their accomplishment, Mchunu expressed pride and gratitude, saying, ‘Although I worked hard and was determined to succeed, achieving cum laude still feels like a significant milestone.’
Zondo was also excited, emphasising her unexpected joy with the results.
Shangase was inspired by her grandfather’s struggles with eye health, while Singh’s lifelong interest in health sciences led her to pursue optometry.
Throughout their academic journey, these students faced various challenges, including the demanding coursework and the transition to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, through perseverance and support from their families and academic mentors, they overcame these obstacles and excelled in their studies.
The students described their academic journeys as enriching and transformative, providing them with valuable knowledge and practical skills. They expressed gratitude for the support of their professors and the vibrant campus community.
Looking ahead, these graduates have ambitious aspirations, including further study, specialisation in optometry subspecialties, and opening their own practices. Their dedication to excellence and commitment to improving vision care serve as inspirations to others in the field.
