The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) Pietermaritzburg (PMB) Campus soccer team were crowned champions of the Asiphephe (Let’s be safe) League after a convincing 4-0 victory over the Edgewood Campus in the final at the Greenfields Sports Arena.
Launched by UKZN’s Risk Management Services (RMS), the Asiphephe League aims to promote wellness and team spirit across campuses and to strengthen unity in the teams while boosting staff morale.
The competition was played in a round-robin format, with each team playing the others home and away.
After matchday 6, the final log offered a clear picture with PMB Campus comfortably on top boasting 18 points, having won all six of their games scoring 28 goals and conceding none. Howard/Medical campus are in second place with seven points having won two games, followed by Westville campus with six points with a win of two games, while Edgewood campus sits in last place on three points with only winning one game. These rankings highlight PMB’s dominance throughout the season.
PMB’s success came from teamwork and key individual performances ‒ Lindokuhle Madondo was the league’s top scorer with 11 goals, followed by Thobelani Dlomo with eight.
Zwakele Ngcobo, Mluleki Ngcobo, and Philani Mchunu, also shone with other team players providing important support, to ensure PMB’s strong performance in every game. Other stand-out scorers from across the league included Phelelani Bhengu (Edgewood Campus), Mluleki Lali (Howard/Medical School), Ngcobo (PMB), and Siphelele Ntombela (Westville Campus).
When the final whistle blew, PMB players, staff and students celebrated on the field. The team lifted the trophy, enjoying the well-deserved victory.
Prize money won by PMB Campus will be donated to assist deserving students,
Acting RMS Director, Mr Lovemore Khumalo, congratulated PMB on their victory and thanked all the campuses for their commitment throughout the season. League chairman, Mr Bonga Mkhize, also commended the teams, noting that although soccer can be tough ‒ “especially as one gets older” – the players showed real effort and passion.
Other soccer dates to look forward to are the Registrar’s Cup, a one- day knockout cup, on 8 December 2025 at the Edgewood Campus, and the Sivikele (Protect Us) Cup in the new year.
