For Tongaat Hulett, Group Export Sales Manager Mr Sean Jaganath, graduating with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) marks the culmination of a journey defined by resilience, tenacity, and unwavering commitment.
Jaganath’s academic pursuit was not without hardship. After successfully completing his theory examinations in 2022, he was forced to take a gap year to recover from a serious illness following a COVID-19 hospitalisation. As he regained his health, new challenges arose – the declining health of his 81-year-old father demanded increased family responsibilities.
Following his father’s passing in December 2023, Jaganath resumed his studies with renewed determination, often working on his dissertation late into the night after fulfilling family obligations. ‘Completing my dissertation after 10 pm nightly while balancing professional and personal responsibilities, was incredibly demanding. It required significant sacrifices, but giving up was never an option,’ said Jaganath.
Balancing a senior leadership role within a major export organisation while navigating personal loss and academic demands showcased Jaganath’s resilience and leadership. His perseverance not only led him to successfully complete his MBA but also to graduate alongside his eldest son, Armaan, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from UKZN.
‘Sharing the graduation with my son is an unforgettable moment for our family. Achieving my master’s degree after so many challenges made the experience even more profound,’ said Jaganath.
In a fitting alignment of personal experience and professional insight, Jaganath’s dissertation, titled: “Exploring Post-Pandemic Potential New Ways of Working Experienced by Managers at a Sugar Refinery in Durban, South Africa”, examined the evolving workplace dynamics brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the supervision of Professor Cecile Gerwel-Proches, his research highlighted the informal yet significant changes that have reshaped organisational practices.
‘While these shifts were evident in our daily operations, they remained largely undocumented. My study not only captured these changes but also offered important insights into their lasting impact,’ he explained.
Jaganath credits the MBA journey for refining his strategic thinking and analytical capabilities – skills he believes will serve him well as he continues to lead and inspire in a constantly evolving business environment. ‘This qualification is more than an academic milestone; it represents perseverance through adversity, the power of resilience, and the enduring pursuit of personal and professional excellence,’ said Jaganath.
