In commemoration of Nelson Mandela Day, which encourages us to take action and inspire change, the UKZN Community has joined the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day national initiative. The aim is to complete as many blankets as possible to benefit those in need.

The UKZN “Good Wool” drive initially took root in August 2016 amongst staff at the College of Law and Management Studies and gained momentum as a University-wide initiative in May 2017. The University Community have completed hundreds of squares that are being joined together to make warm blankets, pledging to keep thousands of underprivileged warmer this winter with each blanket we produce… stitch by stitch.

Groups of staff and students have been spending their lunch hours and even personal time to produce beautiful squares. Many who had never picked up a crochet hook are enjoying the challenge and its significance. So a little bit of us are in all the blankets!

This Tuesday 18 July 2017, please take up your crochet hook or knitting needles to complete your final square!

Remember: Each square must be 20cm x 20cm in size, and 60 squares make a single adult blanket. The UKZN team is already putting contributions together from staff and students who have generously completed the blankets which will be handed over to the organisers of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day for distribution.
