The Nazareth Tertiary Students’ Association (NATESA), a student organisation that promotes the teachings of the Nazareth Baptist Church and its leader, uNyazi Lwezulu Shembe from eBuhleni, organised donations to two orphanages in the Amanzimtoti area, south of Durban.
Inspired by the United Nations Charter, which states that “every child has the right to basic food and clothing”, NATESA donated more than 100 clothing items to the orphanages on Human Rights Day.
The I Care and Mother of Peace orphanages each host around 50 children. Having visited the homes previously, NATESA members felt they were ideal beneficiaries due to the dedication of the staff and the potential shown by the children, some of whom are talented illustrators, and poets.
Ms Kuhlekonke Ndlovu from the I Care Centre expressed her gratitude to the students for ‘putting a smile on their faces.’
A caregiver from the Mother of Peace orphanage added: ‘We had a great time with the students and hope to see them again soon. Sibonge kakhulu, and may God bless them!’
NATESA members contributed quality second-hand clothing through a donation drive, with drop-off points set up across UKZN’s campuses.
Mr Muzomuhle Magubane NATESA Branch Secretary, said March also holds significance for the Nazareth Baptist Church, which is celebrating 115 years of existence.
‘We wish to celebrate this month by spreading love and helping those in need. We hope that this small act of kindness will bring joy to the children and make a meaningful impact in their lives,’ Magubane said.
Founded in 1999, NATESA is present at all 26 public universities in South Africa and has over 200 members across UKZN’s five campuses.
It hosts various initiatives including symposiums, prayer sessions, gala dinners and mentorship programmes to promote Nazareth-based teachings, ensuring that students remain grounded in their faith while at university.
As a student organisation, NATESA, seeks to show gratitude by extending love and support beyond UKZN campuses and into surrounding communities.
‘By doing so, we are demonstrating that as products of UKZN we are not only academically strong, but also compassionate and community-driven individuals who seek to make a difference in society,’ Magubane said.
The Branch Executive Committee looks forward to welcoming new members to the organisation.
