Musician Takes Audiences on an African Spiritual Journey

Born into a musical family, UKZN Bachelor of Arts in Tourism student, Banele MaZulu describes her singing style as African Spiritual.

The 20-year-old, who started performing on school stages at the tender age of seven, said she was inspired to pursue music further because of the general encouragement she received. ‘The desire to keep performing was ignited by praise I received from people who said they loved my voice. Later on, being a part of poetry session evenings encouraged me to branch out into performing on other stages, not just at school.’

MaZulu – born Ms Banele Zulu – said it was initially hard for her to pursue a career in the performing arts due to the late nights that gigging entailed. ‘My mother, who was a single parent, worried about my safety but I sat her down and explained how the industry works and my intentions. I also made sure that I did well at school which gained her trust.

‘She’s only been able to attend one of my performances in-person, which was my first official gig, but she now notices the shift and progress in my craft.’

Describing herself as an old soul, MaZulu is inspired by artists such as Mbuso Khoza who are well-renowned within the genre of ukuthemeleza. She also aims to collaborate with her favourite artists Sjava and Amanda Black, in the future.

Born and raised in Mayville, Durban, she hopes to align her qualification with her venture of owning a business, while honing and expanding her brand as a performing artist.

Having performed at venues including the Playhouse and the Durban International Convention Centre, she looks forward to debuting in the soon-to-be-released movie, Emanzini, made in partnership with the Durban Film Office.

The movie, delves deep into the social ills of South Africa, with a specific focus on the issues of water and xenophobia. Their she plays the character of Nandi, a young girl who lost her mother during the floods and overcomes her phobia of water by learning how to swim and winning swimming competitions.

MaZulu has been featured on tracks such as Ungibuzele with Luyanda EM; and Khulumani with Abaqeqebuli, Velile Makhoba and Hloniphani Art – all of which can be streamed on digital platforms, iTunes and Spotify.
