Matric Helpline Spring School Helps Get Learners in Gear for Upcoming Exams
October 2, 2023 marked the commencement of the inaugural Spring School programme organised by the Matric Helpline team within the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science (CAES).
The week-long event was held in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and aimed to benefit 280 matric learners from eight local schools in KwaZulu-Natal. The primary goal of the project was to provide these learners with essential revision and support in mathematics, physical science, and life science.
As the students eagerly entered the hall on Day One, brimming with anticipation for a week that would be pivotal in their preparations, they were warmly welcomed by Professor Naven Chetty, CAES Dean of Teaching and Learning. He was joined by Mrs Phumzile Majozi, a representative from the Department of Basic Education district office.
When asked about the inception of the Matric Helpline, Chetty explained, ‘During the pandemic, it was clear to us that there was a significant gap within our community and an overwhelming need for support in the fields of science and mathematics. We then started this initiative to assist learners in achieving success and pursuing their desired careers within the realm of science.’ Chetty expressed his enthusiasm for helping learners through this project and encouraged them to actively engage with the expert team of tutors throughout the duration of the programme.
During the week, learners engaged in day-long revision sessions for mathematics, chemistry, life sciences, and physics using workbooks specifically created for this project. The learners were highly satisfied with how the programme was executed, actively participating throughout the week.
On the programme’s final day, learners engaged in games aligned with their curriculum and enjoyed presentations from Schools within their College. The highlight for the team was witnessing the positive impact they had made in the lives of these dedicated learners. ‘We hope to continue our collaboration with the Department of Basic Education in future projects,’ said Chetty.
