Innovation Challenge Ignites Entrepreneurial Spirit at UKZN

A gathering after the Innovation Challenge hosted by Enactus UKZN Howard College campus.

Enactus UKZN Howard College campus branch hosted this year’s Innovation Challenge, a dynamic competition that introduces new members of the organisation to the essence of social entrepreneurship.

This year students were tasked with solving real-world problems by developing innovative business concepts aimed at improving society providing a test of creativity and a celebration of purpose-driven innovation.

Five teams presented their ideas before a distinguished panel of judges comprising Dr Andrisha Beharry-Ramraj from the School of Commerce; former Enactus Leader, Mr Sbongakonke Ntuli; former Deputy President of Enactus, Mr Aphelele Dungelo; and the campus’ Research and Development Officer Ms Nomfundiso Mabhengu. The event was co-ordinated by Deputy President Ms Pamela Kapah and Campus Secretary Inganathi Mhlungulwana.

After a round of impressive presentations, the winning team was Solar Springs whose project addressed a critical issue in rural KwaZulu-Natal – limited access to clean running water. Solar Springs proposed a solution centred on solar-powered water kiosks designed to pump, purify, and distribute safe water to local communities and farmers.

Beyond improving access to clean water, the initiative aims to reduce waterborne diseases, ease the burden on women and children who spend hours collecting water, and create employment opportunities for kiosk operators. It’s an inspiring example of how innovation and empathy can intersect to create lasting community impact.

The success of the Innovation Challenge highlights Enactus UKZN’s unwavering commitment to cultivating a generation of socially conscious leaders ready to tackle complex challenges through entrepreneurial thinking. The triumph of Solar Springs stands as a reminder that when great ideas are powered by passion and purpose, they can truly change lives.

Enactus has been described as a global non-profit organisation that connects students, academics, and business leaders to create sustainable change through innovative solutions. However, Enactus UKZN, is far more than that, it’s a mindset. It’s where a passion for business meets a heart for community, driving real impact through entrepreneurial action.

Our mission is to empower students by helping them develop the leadership and entrepreneurial skills needed to make a meaningful difference in both their communities and future careers. Through our initiatives, we design and implement projects that address pressing social, economic and environmental challenges in sustainable ways. We also emphasise global connections, uniting changemakers across borders to exchange ideas, best practices and collaborate on impactful ventures.
