Department of Student Residence Affairs Westville Campus Relaunches Green Campus Initiative

Creativity meets sustainability.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) Westville campus recently buzzed with colour and creativity during the Green Campus Initiative (GCI) relaunch, themed ‘Creativity Meets Sustainability’.

Hosted by the Residence Life Team, led by Ms Lerato Khoali, the event celebrated innovation, environmental awareness, and student-driven sustainability.

Highlights of the GCI event included an inspiring performance by master of ceremonies (MC) Ms Xolisile Khumalo-Malinga and a unifying address delivered by Residence Life Officer (RLO) Ms Nomathemba Makhathini, along with guest speaker Ms Khanya Buthelezi, CEO of Owethu Waste Group Management, who emphasised the economic and social power of recycling.

Residences showcased their talents through recycled crafts, fashion, and sustainability presentations. Winners included Forest Residence (Best Presentation), Crystal Valley (Most Beautiful Dress), and Gapwood (Most Creative Craft).

Performances by Snothile from Dunstaple Heights Residence and Imbongi yase Khaya added a lively cultural flair, while the ‘Vision and Imagination’ digital session encouraged reflection on sustainable living.

The GCI relaunch successfully united creativity, education, and activism – reaffirming the University’s commitment to building an environmentally conscious and empowered student community.
