Book on Peace, Safety and Security: African Perspectives Launched by SAHS
The School of Applied Human Sciences’ (SAHS) eagerly anticipated launch of the book: Peace, Safety and Security: African Perspectives edited by Professors Nirmala Gopal, Dasarath Chetty (Adjunct professor in Management Studies at the Durban University of Technology), Dipane Joseph Hlalele of the School of Education, and Gert Kruger of Health Sciences took place on 8 August 2023.
The event, held at The Bond Shed, Point in Durban celebrated the editors’ and organisers’ dedication, offering an evening of intellectual exploration, art and community.
SAHS Community Engagement Academic Leader, Dr Nolwazi Ngcobo, opened the proceedings, introducing the book’s African-themed significance, highlighting its broad security exploration, and revealing her role as one of the authors. She highlighted the diverse range of topics covered by the book, from gender-based violence to cybercrime, workplace safety to xenophobia, underscoring its comprehensive exploration of security. The importance of the book as a platform for authors who might not have had the opportunity otherwise was highlighted, with the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) grant supporting writing retreats, and over 80% of authors hailing from the School of Applied Human Sciences.
SAHS Dean, Professor Matshepo Matoane, welcomed attendees, setting the tone.
Poet and Drama Studies lecturer, Ms Ongezwa Mbele’s performance highlighted art’s transformative power in addressing societal issues.
Gopal, Chetty, Hlalele, and Kruger emphasised diverse perspectives’ importance in understanding peace and security. Gopal unveiled the book, displaying commitment amid COVID-19 challenges.
Authors, Dr Simbarashe Tembo (School of Law), Dr Zandile Madlabana Luthuli (SAHS), Ms Fathima Essack (SAHS), Dr Londeka Ngubane (SAHS), presented their chapters, covering topics from regional peacekeeping to student movements. Their insights underlined the multidisciplinary nature of the book.
Dr Shanya Reuben delivered gratitude, encouraging engagement during the interactive session and book signing. The event celebrated knowledge, diversity, and the human sciences’ role in addressing real-world issues.
The book launch celebrated the commendable mentorship of young researchers by experienced scholars, with a special acknowledgment of Gopal’s dedicated guidance that has yielded remarkable results.
Gratitude is extended to the book launch organising team: Dr Shanya Reuben, Ms Shaida Bobat, and Dr Nolwazi Ngcobo. Additionally, profound appreciation is expressed to the SAHS, led by Dean, Professor Matshepo Matoane, for their consistent and invaluable backing during all stages of the book launch’s preparation and execution.
