Basic Education Minister Appoints UKZN Trailblazer, Professor Thabo Msibi, as Umalusi Council Chair

South Africa’s statutory national quality assurance body for general and further education, Umalusi, has a new leader – a trailblazing academic who has spent his career making scholarly excellence look effortless.

Professor Thabo Msibi, University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning, took the helm of the authority’s seventh Council as Chairperson from 8 June 2026 to 7 June 2030, a term of four years. He was appointed to the position by Basic Education Minister Ms Siviwe Gwarube in recognition of his distinguished contributions to education, scholarship, and leadership.

Umalusi oversees the development and management of qualifications, including the annual matric results, within the General and Further Education and Training Qualifications Sub-Framework.

Msibi is an academic leader with a strong track record of breaking barriers and championing educational excellence at a young age. Formerly Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head of the Humanities College at UKZN, he became the youngest Dean in South Africa at the time of his appointment. He was also the youngest member of the executive of the South African Comparative and History of Education Society.

A UKZN alumnus, Msibi obtained both his Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Education Honours degrees from UKZN before completing a Master of Education degree at Teachers College, Columbia University, USA, and a PhD in Education at the University of Cambridge, England.

His scholarly contributions have earned him national and international recognition. Msibi is the first Black South African education scholar to receive the prestigious P-rating from the National Research Foundation. Often referred to as the President’s Award, the rating recognises exceptional researchers who demonstrate outstanding potential to become future leaders in their fields.

His research has been widely published in South African and international journals and books. He is the author of Hidden Sexualities of South African Teachers: Black Male Educators and Same-Sex Desire, and co-editor of Gender, Sexuality and Violence in South African Educational Spaces. He also serves as an Associate Editor of The Oxford Encyclopedia of Gender and Sexuality in Education, and sits on the editorial boards of several leading academic journals, including Perspectives in Education, Alternation, Transformation in Higher Education and the International Journal of Critical Diversity Studies.

Beyond academia, Msibi has distinguished himself as a champion of education and social justice. As a young leader, he founded a debating league to help bridge the divide between township and urban schools and strengthen English language proficiency among township learners. He later established the Community Development Association, a national organisation that provides youth-driven outreach programmes focused on education and leadership development. Through this initiative, pupils from township secondary schools were brought to UKZN to participate in leadership development programmes aimed at expanding educational opportunities and aspirations.

Msibi said he is honoured by his latest appointment and by the confidence placed in him to serve in this role. He said Umalusi plays a vital role in safeguarding the quality, credibility, and integrity of South Africa’s education system, adding that he looks forward to working with Council members, leadership, and stakeholders across the sector to advance the authority’s mandate and strengthen education. “This is both a privilege and a responsibility, and I am committed to serving with dedication, integrity, and purpose,” he said.

Congratulating Msibi, UKZN Executive Director for Corporate Relations, Dr Normah Zondo, said the appointment is fitting, given his outstanding contributions to education and leadership in South Africa. “Throughout his career, Professor Msibi has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to educational excellence and social justice. We are immensely proud that he is contributing to shaping the future of quality assurance and standards in South African education at a national level,” she said.

Msibi’s appointment reflects his longstanding contribution to education, scholarship and leadership, while positioning him to play an important role in shaping quality assurance within South Africa’s education system.
