Alumnus Brings His Learners “Home” for Career Guidance
Educator and proud College of Humanities alumnus, Mr Lihle Mthembu of Sahlumbe High in Ladysmith, brought his Grade 12 learners to UKZN recently as part of a tour of Higher Education Institutions.
Having earned his matric at the school where he currently serves as principal, he said, ‘My intention was to develop my own community and introduce cutting-edge methods to educate a disadvantaged group of learners and introduce them to the excellence on offer at UKZN.’
The learners were hosted by the co-ordinator of the College Access Programme and Schools Liaison officer, Mr Feruzi Ngwamba who outlined the courses on offer at UKZN. He noted that, ‘Receiving you on our campus symbolises the University’s commitment to community engagement and the College of Humanities’ school liaison work under the theme Taking the University to the People.
Mthembu said that while he had been helping learners with their applications, he wanted them to gain a better understanding, which was provided by members of the UKZN community.
Learner, Mr Siyethemba Zungu said, ‘I have learned a lot about the application procedures and criteria; they are really reasonable, and this piqued my interest in enrolling at the Institution.’ Classmate Ms Nomzamo Zulu expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome from the UKZN team, adding that the career talk and tour inspired her to become part of the UKZN community.
