The CENTRE FOR JAZZ & POPULAR MUSIC (UKZN) presents on Wednesday, 12 October 2011 at 17h30. Saxophonist and composer, Thabani Gapara hails from Zimbabwe. His sound is smooth with a hint of an edgy jazz and funk influence. “The Gapara Project” performs a repertoire of original material composed by Thabani Gapara. The music reflects a mix of influences that he has encountered during his musical journey that has seen him leave his native land of Zimbabwe and explore the sounds of South African Jazz and Popular music. The sound developed is unique and authentic.
In Zimbabwe, Thabani has performed with popular bands that include Jazz invitation, Color Blue, Africa Revenge as well as a host of gospel and afro fusion bands. In South Africa he’s a member of the young vibrant band, Sweet Concept who were the Suncoast Casino’s Jazz
competition winners in 2007. Thabani has also performed with local artists who include: Burton Naidoo, Natalie Rungan, Sifaniso, Clive Gumede, Khaya Mthethwa to mention but a few. He is also part of the “Van Band” which won the ‘Battle of the Bands Competition 2010’. Thabani has also been involved in many professional shows such as “Motown”, “Let’s Hear It for The Boys”, “Tribute to Luther” along with several other productions.
