THE CENTRE FOR JAZZ & POPULAR MUSIC (UKZN) Kicks off  the 2012 programme with the sensational  Burton Naidoo Group – Musical Democracy on Wednesday, 15 February 2012 at 18:00

” Anyone can make the simple complicated. Creativity is making the complicated simple.” – Charles Mingus.

‘Musical Democracy’ is inspired by the music and philosophies of Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman.  Harmony, movement of sound, and Melody all share the same value. The general effect is that music achieves an immediately open expression.

The music, though free by nature, will also have a compositional element, inspired by the techniques of the Twentieth Century composers. The artistry is finding the creative balance between the two worlds. Listeners can expect fresh interpretations of songs from Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Chick Corea, Eric Dolphy as well as original music.

Pianist Burton Naidoo is joined by Leon Scharnick on Tenor Saxophone, Sakhile Simane on Trumpet, Bruce Baker on Drums and Logan Byrne on Acoustic Bass.
