Dear Music Friends

Next week is the start of term 3, and we  kick off with Much loved vocalist Sandile Gontsana.

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is proud to present: Sandile Gontsana  – “TRIBUTE TO SOUTH AFRICAN LEGENDS” on Wednesday 24 July 2013.

It has always been one of Gontsana’s big dreams to pay Tribute to some of South Africa’s Legends.

He is  highly influenced by  South African Music by  Sibongile Khumalo, Themba Mkhize, Feya Faku, Don Tshomela, Andile Yenana, McCoy Mrubata, Bheki Mseleku  and Prince Lengoasa to name a few.

Gontsana studied jazz at UCT College of Music (SACM). He completed both his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in jazz voice (cum laude). He later did “private” research about South African Music. He was drawn to the Richness & Depth of the Music as well as the history, musicians, and the development of it. Gontsana moved to Johannesburg in the second part of 2012 where he is enjoying great experience and opportunity of working with some of the legends he will be honouring.

He views this gig as the start of his Celebration of South African Legends. He will interpret their music in a “Sandile Gontsana” way. He has been writing lyrics to existing tunes. Gontsana is very excited to be starting this journey at the UKZN Centre for Jazz and Popular Music. Some of the tracks one can expect on Wednesday are:  Mmetswale by  Moses Taiwa Molelekwa,  Inner Peace  by  Themba Mkhize , Lulu In Adderley Street by Bra Feya Faku.
