Local authorities in Africa, and emerging economies, in general, lack capacity and the institutional support for decision-making for the selection and implementation of appropriate and sustainable waste management strategies. This is exacerbated by the lack of suitable data on the African waste composition. Though waste-to-energy Green Economy technologies are becoming more accessible in Africa, very few are implemented due to lack of investment or poor institutional support at Governmental level. This lecture will present over 15 years of research, development and innovation in Environmental Sanitary Engineering at UKZN.
Professor Trois graduated in Environmental Engineering in 1996 (summa cum laude), obtained a PhD in Geo and Environmental Engineering from the University of Cagliari, Italy in 1999, and has been the Dean and Head of the School of Engineering at the University of KwaZulu-Natal since 2012. She is now full Professor in Environmental Engineering.
Author of over 80 peer-reviewed publications, 40 in ISI rated journals, 4 book chapters and 42 peer-reviewed conference notes Prof Trois is on the Editorial panel for several international ISI and SAPSE journals, peer reviewer for leading ISI journals and international conferences, collaborates with leading World institutions and is Principal Investigator for several multi-million Rand projects funded by the Thekwini Municipality, THRIP, NRF and National LOTTERY.
Prof. Trois is also Programme Coordinator for a Masters in Waste and Resources Management, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology and CSIR, Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of Italy, since 1998, a fellow of the Global Engineering Deans Council and South African Academy of Engineering and nominated as Chair of the United Nations’ Secretariat of the IPLA Programme for the Southern African region since 2013.
