‘Intermissions’ is a series of vignettes, devised and performed by 2nd and 3rd year students from UKZN’s Drama and Performance Studies department. Taking their cue from the paintings of surrealist artist, Rene Magritte, each vignette depicts an original story inspired by the painter’s disturbing, witty and often confusing paintings. Told in a variety of styles, the plays explore themes of love, loss, deception and possession. A mob boss orders a hit – to disastrous consequence, A minister makes a deal with the Devil, A young woman appears possessed, A gown becomes a vessel of desire and despair, A group of nuns conceal a troubling secret and in the end, what was Magritte really on about?
