IKUSASA LETHU is a professional ensemble comprised of African Music and Dance students and staff that perform nationally and internationally. It was formed in 2000 by the director Dr Patricia Opondo to provide a creative platform for students to workshop and present their original compositions and choreography.
The group has previously performed in Canada, Peru, Germany, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Sweden and Denmark.
The Wednesday afternoon concert features the following repertoire and choreography:
African Modern Dance, Percussion. Umzansi, Isgenyane, Xigubu, plus a collaboration with LABELLE – an electronic musician from the Reunion Islands visiting Durban under the umbrella of Alliance Francaise in his composition “Selunding”. LABELLE will be present at the concert, and immediately following the concert, there will be a workshop with the performers in preparation for the Human Rights Day Performance at Sutton Park, Morningside on Friday 21st March from 15h00-23h00 for the FRANCOFETE/HUMAN RIGHTS DAY. Other artists on the bill include Gcina Mhlope & Dans Mon Zoubik, Elysee Junction and Nibs van der Spuy, Burundi Drummers, Vusi Makanya, Freres Souchet, Sibongile Mbambo and Labelle – Free Entrance and all are welcome.
