It is often assumed that violence works and that nonviolence does not. This presentation will examine international evidence from four cases: campaigns to bring about social change, corporal punishment to bring up good children, the criminal justice system to deter criminal behaviour, and armed conflict to bring about peace.

Geoff Harris is Professor and Head of the Peace building Programme at the Durban University of Technology, and Sylvia Kaye is a Senior Lecturer at UKZN, coordinating the PhD scholarship programme at the Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division (HEARD).
