Dear Graduands, Staff and Students,

We had hoped that by this time in 2021, the University would be able to hold its traditional live graduation celebrations. Unfortunately, due to the unprecedented challenges brought on by COVID-19 and the frequent changes in national regulations to counter waves of the pandemic, the University has had to continue with the conferral of qualifications and the distribution of its degree and diploma certificates using a virtual format.

As one of the largest universities in South Africa, Graduation is an enormous undertaking involving a variety of inputs and components.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s 2021 Spring Graduation Ceremonies will thus be conducted virtually. All the qualifications listed in the various graduation programmes will be conferred and awarded during digital events.

The University will air four separate ceremonies, one for each College, to ensure a bespoke College ceremony, inclusive of all the Schools.  These ceremonies will be available for online viewing by graduands, families and friends, and a recording of the events as well as a programme will be shared with graduates on the day of their graduation.

The Ceremonies, all on November 24, will be broadcast at the following times:

College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science

College of Health Sciences

College of Humanities

College of Law and Management Studies

We appreciate that our graduands, families, friends and staff may be disappointed and saddened by the decision to hold the ceremonies virtually.  However, considering the size of the undertaking and the time required to host face-to-face graduations as well as the implicit public health risks, we regrettably have no choice.

  • Graduates are reminded that Degree/Diploma Certificates WILL BE WITHHELD if they owe fees, have not paid library fines or have not returned library books.

Once outstanding fees have been cleared and the Fees Office on Campuses (details below) duly informed, certificates will be released after five days which is the time needed for fee payments to clear.
