UKZN Gears Up for Mandela Day
As Mandela Day draws closer, Professor Angela James, UKZN School of Education Academic Leader in Community Engagement, is working hand-in-hand with Ms Susan Eslick, 67 Blankets Mandela Day South Africa Ambassador, to make a positive contribution on the day.
Spearheading the initiative at the College of Humanities, James and Mr Innocent Luthuli, a second-year student in the School of Education, organised for students and UKZN staff members to participate in crocheting and knitting blankets for the needy. Eslick has engaged in other ventures such as the Secret Scarves campaign.
As a result of her vast experience from working with people from various backgrounds, Eslick is excited to contribute to this initiative which includes the contribution of people from all walks of life. She said, ‘As my children are of similar age to the 20-year-olds at UKZN, I thoroughly enjoy working with students. I also volunteer at a retirement village – collecting wool to give to the elderly folks as well.’
An excited pre-service teacher in the foundation phase, Ms Khotsofalang Paneng, said she has managed to make two squares within a week. ‘I’m so excited to have been part of such a great initiative. I have also started teaching people how to create squares, and an outcome of 10 squares from myself would make me super proud,’ added Paneng.
Two staff members from the cleaning services, Ms Alice Zondi and Ms Nelisiwe Zondi, recently joined the group and are looking forward to being involved in this initiative “forever”. ‘So far, I am happy with my progress within the brief period doing this. I am doing this for my family,’ said Zondi.
In addition, Eslick said for some people, such groups help with their mental health, encouraging others to join in as there are many interesting activities that take place whilst allowing one a chance to help those in need.
She also urged people to look out for Mandela Day projects, announced on the 67 Blankets for Mandela Day Facebook page.
Added James, ‘I thank participants for attending, learning a new skill for some, and contributing to this important initiative. The University community is encouraged to join the group or start their own groups in support.’
To join the group or get assistance on how to start as a group or individually, please contact Professor Angela James at Jamesa1@ukzn.ac.za or Ms Rakshika Sibran at sibran@ukzn.ac.za.
Please note that a limited number of wool skeins and knitting needles are available for those interested in creating squares and submit them once complete. You are urged to submit these by 3 June, however, participants are encouraged to join the campaign all-year-round.
