The UKZN Corporate Relations Team received three awards at the annual Marketing, Advancement and Communication in Education (MACE) National Congress in Johannesburg.

The team won merit awards for the UKZNTouch Alumni Magazine; the Community Outreach publication; and the Agriculture, Engineering and Science Marketing publication.

In her congratulatory message Ms Normah Zondo, Acting Executive Director for the Division of Corporate Relations said: ‘We are grateful for great work done by the team.   The awards are a result of the excellent work done by staff and students and showcased through our publications.  We really aim to inspire greatness in all we do.’

Held this year under the theme: The Power of Innovation and Creativity – Making an Impact and Adding Value, the Congress provides excellent professional learning and development opportunities for delegates who attend from universities around South Africa. The 2017 Congress was hosted by the University of Witwatersrand.

Speakers at the congress included businesswoman and former Miss South Africa, Basetsana Kumalo, who addressed the gathering on the power of self-innovation and making an impact by navigating through difficult times. She challenged delegates to strive to learn something new every day.

Achieve Your Impossible was the title of SABC-TV and radio personality Leanne Manas’s presentation. Manas said one of the worst things people could do was to ‘keep their mouths shut. Don’t be afraid to fail, be afraid not to try,’ said Manas.

Other topics discussed included new trends in marketing and branding, latest practices in advancement and development, communicating across multiple platforms, stakeholder relations, event management and student recruitment.

Leading South Africa’s social media law expert Ms Emma Sadleir spoke on the dos and don’ts in the social media space, highlighting legal, disciplinary and the reputational risks of social media.
