UKZN third-year Sport Science student and Banyana Banyana player Ms Kholosa Biyana hosted an Indigenous Recreation, Sport and Wellness Day for students with disabilities (SWD) in collaboration with the Discipline of Biokinetics, Exercise, and Leisure Sciences (BELS) and the Disability Support Unit (DSU).

The day aims to provide a platform for disabled UKZN students to socialise and compete in sporting codes and recreational activities.

Executive member of the UKZN Sports Committee for Students with Disabilities (SCSWD), BELS lecturer Ms Khumbuzile Khumalo said: ‘The students get the opportunity to compete in inter-campus events, nationally and internationally.’

Khumalo and the SCSWD organised goalball, blind cricket, and board games across all campuses for the day.

Khumalo approached Biyana, requesting sponsorship and without hesitation she agreed to sponsor the UKZN men’s and women’s goalball teams with playing kits.

‘While at a camp with Banyana Banyana, we visited a school for the blind where we watched youngsters play goalball and judo – there and then I decided I would work with the blind, making sure I give back,’ said Biyana.

Khumalo is committed to growing sport for SWD on campus. ‘My special thanks to Kevin Pillay, Sport Science students and BELS academic Leader Dr Rowena Naidoo for great support,’ she added.
